Published Oct 30th, Ms. Aligned 2 is the second anthology in a series. This time through, the collection includes fiction, poetry, and nonfiction in which women writers explore male thinking, behavior, and identity. In our current political and social climate of change, its a compelling idea for writers who identify as women to write directly about or from the viewpoint of men. Rebecca noted their hopes in pulling this project together: The only way forward right now is through seeing, hearing, and empathizing. I think each piece in the anthology speaks to this. With nonfiction, the lens of a woman exploring male thinking is most apparent (the author’s I is more present here), and I was so pleased with the nonfiction essays that we have. Its important to point out here that this is the kind of grassroots editing that is brought to the surface through staff dedication. This isnt coming from a publishing house with lots of resources, so Rebecca, Connie and Pat had to give a lot of time and a lot of themselves to this project. The work was supported  in part by the SEED IDEAS office of the University of Hawai‘i at Manoa, and was published by El León Literary Arts of Berkeley. If you can find, as a reader, a small publication like this that shows such drive, you can almost feel the love in the pages. There are lots of anthologies like this out in the world they are often themed, regularly published and almost always supported by a small staff. Its my hope that anthologies like Ms. Aligned can get more attention. Anthology collections are where exciting writing comes to the surface. Like Zines of the 90s and into the 2,000s, anthologies are hidden gems of culture and talent that are more available now with the democratization of publishing. Connie, meanwhile, hopes that Ms. Aligned brings readers a new depth in their reading: I hope people feel seen, comforted, hopeful, inspired.

For example, most of my family is big boned people. Some people have hypothyroidism or an underactive thyroid. This condition can make a person sluggish and out of energy so they will not be able to exercise or eat healthily. With obesity, many restrictions follow, for example wearing certain sized clothing, or assigned particular seat on a bus, plane, or amusement park ride. If a person is obese they usually have a hard time to find clothes. For instance, most of time my dad goes to Shreveport to the Big Tall men store. This is where he buys his shirts and pants at cheap price. This group of people feels that being obese is a lifestyle and that too much cost goes into providing the coverage for obesity. Obesity can affect a lot of people’s health by causing diabetes, sleep disorders, heart complications, and breathing problems. For instance, a man named Joe who appeared on the TV show The Biggest Looser started the program weighing at 450 pounds and having to take medication for his health problems. He stayed on the show for three weeks and he lost a whopping 215 pounds. Since he lost all of that weight he did have to take the medication anymore. If people worked on having the will power to exercise and eat healthily, they could have more energy and not feel exhausted. I know it is not always people’s fault for being obese but that does not mean they have to stay fat for the rest of their lives. Even before these Europeans came, the Africans already have their own culture, followed their own society and lived their own lives. With the intervention of these European colonizers and slave drivers, everything has changed for them. High class African tribesmen were mixed with regular tribe members, and they were all treated equally as lowlife, black slaves. These misconceptions about Africans have existed in a long time, where even in this time, some people still think wrongly about these people. Many people, who think that the Africans were uncivilized before the European settlers came, were generally misguided. There wasn't much account on how these "black slaves" lived before they were shipped in different parts of the west. It was unintentional for those who don't know anything about the lives of these African people before they came here. There wasn't enough information about them, and by word of mouth, people eventually came up with the idea that these slaves were uneducated, uncivilized people from Africa. It wasn't long since that idea on African has spread even into neighboring countries, mainly because these African slaves are being traded. It is important to keep the people from knowing much about the origins of these Africans. It was convenient for the slave traders to brand them uncivilized, in order to justify their actions. It was also a perception of colonizers that upon entering or "founding" of a new land, they are the ones to fight the "savages," and in this case, it was the Africans who were branded savages and uncivilized people. It is a tendency to dehumanize those who were being colonized so that what the colonizers did was for a good cause, rather than an evil intention. Europeans kept on believing that Africans were inferior because they are the main players in the slave trade. No slave should be held higher or as the same level as their masters.
